Not that long ago we only had gyms for bodybuilders and strength athletes. The formula was simple… get a building… fill it with as much equipment as possible… get a few beefy guys to work in it… sit back and wait for the bodybuilders, strength athletes (and wannabes) to come in.
If you built it they would come.
Over time the industry expanded to include additional markets… aerobics got the girls in… cardio equipment got the fitness market in… additional facilities got the recreational market in… non-profits got the family market in…
Most businesses tried to get in on most of these markets in one way or another with varying degrees of success. However, the basic offering remained the same… equipment in a building.
Sure the equipment is much nicer, the décor is much nicer, the staff are better qualified (although not always better), the TVs are certainly bigger… but the basic offering is still the same… the industry is more stuck in the past than it realizes.
So how do you get unstuck?
Alan Kay said it best…‘the best way to predict the future is to invent it’.
