Our experience is that owners and managers are much more likely to be invested in operational issues than strategic issues. Of course, operational issues are important but they can only ever deliver incremental improvement (the kind that helps you keep up with the competition) and not radical improvement (the kind that drives significant revenue and profit growth).
Of course, when you spend all of your time working “in” your business (operations focused) there is no time to spend working “on” your business (strategy focused) all that you should ever expect is incremental improvements… and incremental improvement is the cost of doing business, not a competitive advantage.
We fully understand that operational issues don’t just resolve themselves and it can be extremely difficult to extricate yourself from the day-to-day routine long enough to start thinking strategically… and even when you do get some time, where do you start?
When your core competencies are built around operations, strategic business development rarely comes easily. In fact, many attempts at strategic thinking are actually thinly veiled operations thinking… tweaking existing operations rather than developing, implementing, and executing a strategy to overcome them.
The result is a vicious cycle of ad hoc “tactical” solutions that, without a solid strategic framework, typically, delivers short-term results, is inconsistent, sporadic, and unpredictable, and generally underperforms expectations.
